A Comparative Study of Different Schemes Based on Bézier-like Functions with an Application of Craniofacial Fractures Reconstruction

Cranial implants, especially custom made are complex, important and necessary in craniofacial fracture restoration surgery. However, the classical procedure of manual design implant is time consuming complicated. Different computer-based techniques proposed by different researchers, including CAD/CAM, mirroring, reference skull, thin plate spline radial basis functions have been used for cranial restoration. Computer Aided Geometric Design (CAGD) has also bio-modeling specifically defects form curves, namely C1,C2,GC1GC2, rational B-spline Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) curves. This paper gives an in-depth comparison existing highlighting limitations advantage contexts. The construction fractures using Bézier-like (Ball, Bernstein Timmer functions) analyzed detail. C1,GC1 GC2 cubic Ball curves performed well small fractured part. Any constructed this approach it effectively applied to frontal parietal bone fractures. NURBS can be any type parts more friendly user.
